Discovering Your One Thing: A Path to Wellness

Updated: Nov 4

Health is about engaging in projects that are meaningful to you. These projects should reflect your most important inner values. In his book, The Power of Significance, #1 New York Times bestselling author John C. Maxwell motivates readers to “start with your one thing that you can do better than anything else.”

It’s not just about what you do better than anyone else. It’s about the talent God placed inside you. When you take that talent and use it in extraordinary ways, you can change the lives of others for the better. In the process, you will change your own life and achieve wellness. My grandmother had many talents, but her creativity stood out. She could take ordinary yarn and crochet or knit extraordinary items. From hats to house slippers, coats, skirts, full dresses, and scarves, she made it all. She even covered beds with brilliantly stitched blankets and pillow covers.

When she taught me how to crochet, I was thrilled! I loved it! However, I later realized that I couldn’t do it like her. But when it comes to teaching through writing and artistic expression, I can do it as intricately and elaborately as Nana’s knitting. That’s my “one thing.”

Finding Your One Thing

What is your one thing? Matthew 25:15-18 describes how God gives us talents and what He expects us to do with His precious gift: “And to one He gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability; and immediately He went on a journey. Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. And likewise, he who had received two gained two more also. But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his Lord’s money (talent).”

Once you decide to work with your “one, two, or five” things, you will realize that practice and consistency lead to excellence.

Some of us may be endowed with sensational singing, while others possess analytical and statistical acumen. Whatever your talent is, strengthen it. You can do this by taking a course, going to school, or finding a mentor to guide you. Do what you can to enhance your talent, and you will feel like a brand new person as you fulfill your purpose.

The Joy of Sharing Your Talent

When you focus on doing that one thing that is meaningful to you, you find rest. You enjoy expressing who you really are and showing what you can do to bring a smile to others. Doing that one thing gives peace to your soul, and health for your body follows.

You feel good when you do your one thing and expand it in ways that positively affect others. You begin to see them feeling good about you sharing your gifts. That’s what “trading” is all about: giving yourself in exchange for that smile of gratitude from someone who needed your service or the product you made.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21).

The Consequences of Hiding Your Talent

Does it not follow that if you bury your one talent, your one thing, God cannot move in your life to give you what you truly desire? Just think about it. Could it be that health problems mostly arise from stress due to financial struggles? What would happen if we proclaimed freedom from financial bondage by taking a step to do that one thing? Will not God meet us and double our earnings?

Aligning Your Values with Your Purpose

Your values are the core beliefs you hold about God, people, and yourself. They are your treasure—what you cherish most. When your values align with God’s will, blessings will flow. This includes wellness in every aspect of your life: family, ministry or business, finances, and health.
