In the Middle of Today

Standing at the bus station with a load of bags outside and a load of ‘long-journey-fatigue’ inside, I quietly petitioned to the Pragia driver, “Young man, please, take me to the taxi station so that I can finally reach my destination.”  He eyed me up and down, and finally said, “Let’s go,” but just sat there.  “Won’t you help me with my bags?”  They are a bit heavy for me to carry.”  “You know I don’t have to pick your bags and load them into the car.  My job is to drive you to where you want to go!”  Dismayed by his ‘talking out the wrong side of his mouth’ (as my father used to say), I looked at the soul of him.

Young men are entangled, literally bound in tethers of hardcore pain, so much so they cling to a spiritual world of darkness because they feel the light is too ‘hard’ to cope with.  The source of this pain is found in their imaginary abandonment of hope in the goodness of God because of how they feel life is treating them. One young man, who had successfully completed senior high school, and was looking forward to continuing his education at university, woke up early Friday morning, and upon hearing his family couldn’t get money to pay for the reality of his hope, locked and blocked the door to his room and drank a bottle of poison.

Looking into the soul of this Pragia driver, I saw the frustration, the raw reality of the hustler’s harassment just to make enough to eat; and the bitterness he’d stacked up around his heart to block out and push back anyone and anything that would cause his heart to completely break.  These young men live at the brink of mental breakdown, at the cusp of losing control of their minds; insanity is crouching at their ‘door’, and they don’t know how to overcome that spirit, so they succumb to it with ‘I-break-you-first-before-you-can-break me’ pride, the haughty eye, and poisonous utterances spewing from darkened souls to annihilate the light of the hopeful.

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community (Proverbs 6:16-19 NIV).

“My son, are you talking to your mother this way? So you want me to lift these bags, too heavy for me, but light as a feather for you? Are you serious?  What’s going on with you that makes you talk this way?”  Seeing the pain in my own eyes, he was satisfied of accomplishing his goal to make somebody hurt like he was hurting.  He got down and put the bags in the Pragia and drove me to the taxi station.  Recovering from his blow, I noticed the earrings in his ears.  Curious to understand why this trend is spreading like wildfire among the youth today, I gently spoke to him, “Please, may I ask you a question?”  He looked at me, waiting to hear it: “Why is it you young men are wearing earings?”  He frankly said, “It’s what they doing in the U.K. and USA. So it’s cool. We do it, too.”  “So can’t you young guys here follow your own cultural trends and not be followers of others? You got something going on here that’s much more valuable than piercing your ears.” (I didn’t have time to go into the biblical history of why a man’s ear was pierced indicating his perpetual slavery to his human master; and that it was not a fashion option.)

“What do we got here like that?” his eyes wondered.  Before I could answer him, another young man ran up to me shouting, “Come, where do you to go!  Give me ……. (an amount too large for the fare I have paid dozens of times before today).”  “Young man, why are you shouting at me like this? I just got here.  What you’re demanding you yourself know is too much.  Why all this greed buried under your deceit just to get quick cash from someone you think doesn’t know this place? Do I find another driver, or are you coming to your right senses now?” Turning to the eyes of the Pragia driver still lingering on the question, I answered, “You got a realness of your own that is beautiful; own it for yourselves.” “Okay, how much you wanna pay?” I told him the real fare.  He gave that ‘she’s-seen-though-my-cover-of-lies’ tough guy grin, “Get in.  Let’s go.”  He calls himself “Poison.”

Standing in the middle of today, we got young boys growing up headstrong while dangling headlong over a chasm of self-destruction. We also got young girls growing up so fast, they think, talk, and walk over the wisdom of their mothers spitting on it like it’s not ‘relevant’ to their contemporary lives as AI and social media hype up a falsified Gen Z and Alpha Gen vibe—all vanity, all lies.

Dear remnant of God, the true believers in Jesus Christ, we are the light of hope young people find hard to cope because they have no one to direct them. HOPE IS not a wishful desire (“I hope it doesn’t rain today”), but a CONFIDENT EXPECTATION AND ASSURANCE OF A FUTURE GOOD BASED ON GOD’S CHARACTER AND PROMISES. Go beyond their insulting prideful eyes and words and look into the souls of the young people around you.  They want you to lead them to the truth of life which is SALVATION AND FREEDOM IN CHRIST and to hope: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13 NIV). We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure (Hebrews 6:19 NIV).

Take Me to the Water and through the Fire is a “clarion call to the faithful remnant—those who refuse to settle for a Christianity that merely entertains rather than transforms, that not only attracts crowds but also makes disciples.”1 This book is a discipleship instructional manual designed for the mature Christian to walk hand-in-hand alongside a newborn soul in Christ along life’s heaven-bound narrow way.  The Light is easy for young people who have someone to lean on as they become equipped to overcome the spiritual forces of darkness that build the seven things that are detestable to the Lord (Proverbs 6:16-19).

Your help is needed to get this manual into the hands of every Mentor-Teacher and their young soul disciple at no or low cost.  Donations for printing this book to distribute to church families in the rural villages is our vision as well as making this pivotal work available in the hands of Mentor-Teachers and their young soul disciples across the nations.
